This is a well known Soviet patriotic song during the World War II in the 1940's. It's an emotionally sad and it has always brought people into tears.
In the WWII, Soviet had about more than 26.2 million people died, that was about 14% of the total Soviet population, or one out of every seven died during the war. Death was not happened to other families, death was happened to every family in Soviet.
As a comparison; Nazi Germany was 10.5%, China 3.9%, Japan 3.8%, France 1.3%, Italy 1.0%, UK 0.9%, and USA 0.3%.
NOTE: Out of the 26.2 million Soviet deaths, Russia has 14.0 million and all the other ex-Soviets have 12.3 million, notably Ukraine 6.8 million, Belarus 2.3 million.
Therefore, this is not just a Russian song, this is a Soviet song. All the Soviets have the blood and tears in it.

The song was chosen by Serebro to satisfy the patriotic song requirement when they entered the competition to represent Russia to compete in the Eurovision Contest in Helsinki last year.

Komitas's life was spared through the intervention of a group of influential friends during the Armenian Genocide in 1915, but he lived to see everyone he loved to die in the Genocide. Komitas had never recovered from the emotional shock. He died in a psychiatric mental institute.

Dutoit was the conductor of Bern Symphony at that time. They have a daughter Annie Dutoit. The video clip was filmed at their home in Bern, 1972.

Every year on April 24, Armenians gather at "Tsitsernakaberd Genocide Memorial" at Yerevan, Armenia to remember the victims of the 1915 Armenian Genocide that took place in the Ottoman Empire carried out by the Turkish government. "Tsitsernakaberd" (Ծիծեռնակաբերդ) means "Fortress of Small Swallows." There are also many memorials dedicated to Armenian genocide in other countries, that including more than 30 such memorials in France alone.
The "Tsitsernakaberd Genocide Memorial" consists of a 100-meter wall with names of towns and villages where massacres are known to have taken place, a 44-meter stele that symbolizes the national rebirth of Armenians, 12 slabs that are positioned in a circle, representing 12 lost provinces in present day Turkey. In the center of the circle, in depth of 1.5 meters, there is an eternal flame, and an underground circular museum at the other end of the Memorial park.
