Científicos brasileños anunciaron hoy el hallazgo de un fósil de una especie inédita de cocodrilo que vivió hace 62 millones de años y que resistió al fenómeno que extinguió a los grandes dinosaurios.
El Guarinisuchus munizi, de unos tres metros de largo, fue encontrado en la región de Mina Poty, en el estado de Pernambuco (nordeste del país), en piedras de formación tipo "Maria Farinha" y pertenece al grupo de los Dyrosauridae, una forma de crocodiloforme totalmente marina.
Además, los paleontólogos explicaron que los crocodiloformes dirossaurídeos, como la especie presentada hoy, fueron los mayores depredadores del mar después de la gran extinción de especies ocurrida hace 65 millones de años.
El fósil fue presentado hoy por paleontólogos brasileños en el Museo Nacional de Río de Janeiro, junto con una réplica de su cráneo y una reconstrucción a tamaño natural del animal.
El hallazgo de este fósil sirvió de ayuda a los científicos para establecer una nueva ruta de expansión de este tipo de animales de origen africano por América.
Según esta nueva teoría, la especie habría llegado a América después de una travesía marítima de 2000 kilómetros, distancia que separaba la costa africana de lo que hoy es el nordeste de Brasil.
