The ideas expressed here are inspired by the 19th century American political economist and social philosopher, Henry George, b.1838 d.1897. In his best known book Progress and Poverty, published in 1878 he asks the question: WHY IS THERE SO MUCH POVERTY AMID SO MUCH PROGRESS?. It is the question of all time and is more relevant today than ever. Progress and Poverty became a world wide best seller and along with his others books inspired much of the social movement during what is known as the Progressive era. His answer did not sit well with vested interests and his name, contribution and main point, that land belonged to everyone and could be shared most appropriately by a tax on 100% of its market rental value, was wiped from economics education by professors and schools originally funded by wealthy land and natural resource owners.

Check out the website for the Democratic Freedom Caucus. They're a caucus in the Democratic Party that supports the land value tax. In their platform they state:

"Taxes on income, sales, or buildings all take away the rewards of labor, so they are the most harmful kinds of taxes. The least harmful tax is a tax on land location value or on extraction of natural resources, because those are not products of labor, but are fixed resources."
