Performed by numerous Pub Bands and Recorded by Artists like Alistair Hulett a Native Scott Musician who lived many years in Australia and then returned to Scotland.
Sometimes controversial as numerous versions, arrangements and interpretations exist. Sometimes referred to as Balad No.9.
Based on a the story of a Scottish knight who is taken by the Earl of Northumberland. The knight persuades the Earl's daughter, (the fair flower) to free him and come with him to Scotland, by promising to marry her. As soon as they reach his home, he tells her to return to Northumberland as he already has a wife and children. She pleads with him to take her as a servant, or to kill her, both of which he refuses.
The knight returns her to her people. Her father complains of how easily her love was won, and all blame the seduction on Scottish treachery, and all say that she will be allowed to return home.
MOTE: There are many versions and verses to the song depending on Artist, Arrangement Dialect and Audience etc. And sometimes it is the word "Fool" is substituted for the word "Flower".
"THE FAIR FLOWER OF NORTHUMBERLAND"
The provost's aye daughter was making her lane Oh but her love was easy won And she heard a Scots prisoner a making his mane And she's the fair flower of Northumberland
"It's oh, gin the lassie would borrow a key" Oh but her love was easy won "And I'd make her a lady of high degree If she'd loose me out of this prison stang"
Oh she's gane then tae her faither's bed stock Oh but her love was easy won And she's stolen the keys for many a braw lock And she's loosed him out of his prison strang
Oh she's gane ben tae her faither's stable Oh but her love was easy won And she's ta'en a horse that's both fleet and able To carry them ben tae bonnie Scotland
As they were a riding across the Scot's moor He said, "Oh but her love was easy won Get doon frae my horse, you're a brazen faced whore Although you're the flower of northumberland"
"It's I hae a wife in my ain country Oh but her love was easy won And I cannae do nothing wi a lassie like thee So go get ye back tae Northumberland"
"It's cook in your kitchen I surely will be" Oh but her love was easy won "And I'll serve your lady most reverently For I dare nae go back tae Northumberland"
"It's cook in my kitchen ye cannae well be Oh but her love was easy won For my lady, she winnae hae servants like thee So get ye back tae Northumberland"
But laith was he the lassie tae tyne He said, " Oh but her love was easy won" So he's hired an old horse and he's feed an old man To carry her hame tae Northumberland
But when she gaed in, her Faither did froon And said, " Oh but her love was easy won To be a Scot's whore and you're fifteen years old And you're the fair flower of Northumberland"
But when she gaed in, her mither did smile And said, " Oh but her love was easy won You're nae the first that the Scots hae beguiled And you're still the fair flower of Northumberland"
"For ye winnae want bread and ye winnae want wine Oh but her love was easy won And ye winnae want silver to buy a man And you're still the fair flower of Northumberland"

Wildwood Flower - Mother Maybelle Carter - American Classic. Now a Tribute to an American
Wildwood Flower - Mother Maybelle Carter - American Classic. Now a Tribute to an American Music Legend. Originaly written by A.P. Alvin Pleasant Carter. It is said it was originally sung by Sarah (Sara) Carter and later made popular by Maybelle Carter. The old 1928 f-hole Gibson Guitar she played is reported to be the Most Important instrument in the Country Music Hall of Fame. Both are now Legends.
Trivia: This recording (sourced from Ernie Tubb's in Nashville TN) minimally remixed and digitally remastered here for YouTube, is complete with Chords and Lyrics for guitar, etc.
Something that is not widely remembered, is that nearly every soldier home from WWII made a bee-line straight to the Music Store to buy a Guitar. The first thing all of them wanted to learn was the Carter Scratch, so they could learn to play "Wildwood Flower" as recorded by Maybelle Carter.

WILDWOOD FLOWER Written by: A. P. Carter Sung By: Mother Maybelle Carter
CAPO: 2nd Fret/KEY: E/ START PLAY: D
[D] Oh, I'll twine with my mingles and [A7] waving black [D] hair
With the roses so red and the [A7] lilies so [D] fair (fare)
And the myrtle so [D7] bright with the [G] emerald [D] hue (dew)
The pale and the leader and [A7] eyes look like [D] blue.
Oh I'll dance, I will sing and my (*laugh - heart) shall be gay
I will charm every heart, in his crown (crowd) I (survey) will sway
When I woke from my dreaming, my idol was clay
All portion of love had all flown away.
Oh he taught me to love him and promised to love.
And to cherish me over all others above.
How my heart is now wond'ring (wandering) no mis'ry (misery) can tell
He's left me no warning, no words of farewell.
Oh, he taught me to love him and called me his (flow'r - flower - flour)
That was blooming to cheer him through life's dreary hour.
Oh, I long to see him and regret the dark hour.
He's gone and neglected (his) this pale wildwood flower (flow'r - flour).
Maybelle Carter "Scratch Technique" (Lead parts picked out on Low Notes, while Rythm is strummed on the High note chords with fingers)
************************
An Earlier Version I'LL TWINE 'MID THE RINGLETS (Maud Irving and J.P. Webster) (1860)
I'll twine 'mid the ringlets of my raven black hair. The lilies so pale and the roses so fair.
The myrtle so bright with an emeral hue, and the pale aronatus with eyes of bright blue.
I'll sing and I'll dance, my laugh shall be gay, I'll cease this wild weeping, drive sorrow away.
Tho' my heart is now breaking, he never shall know, that his name made me tremble and my pale cheeks to glow.
I'll think of him never, I'll be wildly gay I'll charm ev'ry heart, and the crowd I will sway.
I'll live yet to see him regret the dark hour, when he won, then neglected, the frail wildwood flower.
He told me he loved me, and promis'd to love Trough ill and misfortune, all others above.
Another has won him; ah, misery to tell, he left me in silence, no word of farewell.
He taught me to love him, he call'd me his flower.
That blossom'd for him all the brighter each hour.
But I woke from my dreaming, my idol was clay.
My visions of love have all faded away.

SUITED and BOOTED - HIGH GERMANY This Track: A Reflection on Love and War:
Often as not, Love (and Lovers) are the true Victims of War. Unfortunately it is often overlooked on all sides, and more specifically on both sides when dealing in matters of the heart.
The oral Folk Tradition has regularly produced songs denouncing wars from the point of view of those most likely to be adversely affected by them and High Germany is one of the best of these from late18th Century England. I learned this song many years ago from a live recording of Frankie Armstrong and Louis Killen. (Alistair Hulett)

Thus song dates back to the 18th Century and High Germany is the old name used in England at that time for Bavaria and Southern Germany. The dialect of Southern Germany is still known as High German today, while in the North they speak Low German. Believed to date from the Seven Year War of the 1720s (if not earlier). In any instance it is a fascinating window into the History of the area and the Music as well. (Alistair Hulett)

LekTa ( Speaks on the wind ) - Lakota Sioux - American Indian Princess. Lakota - The Allies.
Dedicated to my Great-Grandmother "LekTa" of the Lakota Sioux Tribe of the High Plains of North America. (The wisdom of the ancients and the elders which she passed along is beyond measure. The bloodline of which I knew the least, gave me the most.)
Music - Original Score - Traditional Lakota Sioux. Original Arrangement - Littleleaf - Remix Compilation.
Video - Compilation.
Original Art - Doolittle - Remastered Compilation.
Storyline - Clover
Story - "LekTa" roughly translated (Speaks on the wind) - Lakota Sioux American Indian Maiden-Princess.
"Lakota" and "Dakota" are different pronunciations of the same tribal name, which means "the allies".
One Sioux dialect has the letter "L" in it, and the other dialect does not. This is only a pronunciation difference, not a political one.
Of the 13 Sioux political subdivisions, seven pronounce the word "Lakota," four pronounce it "Dakota," one pronounces it "Nakota," and one is split between pronouncing it "Dakota" and "Nakota." But they all consider themselves part of the same Sioux Culture.

60 Years Late. Woodrow Wilson Keeble
WASHINGTON (CBS News) ― Woodrow Wilson Keeble, a Lakota Sioux, was a gifted athlete, courted by the White Sox. But Uncle Sam won the recruitment battle, CBS Evening News anchor Katie Couric reports.
Keeble became a highly-decorated soldier in World War Two. A buddy said, "The safest place to be was next to Woody."
When the Korean War broke out, he re-enlisted, saying, "Somebody has to teach these kids to fight."
And on an October day in 1951, he taught them the meaning of courage.
With U.S. forces pinned down, he headed up a mountain alone, taking out three enemy positions. Though badly wounded, the man known as "Chief" refused to be evacuated, and fought on - saving the lives of other soldiers.
Keeble once said, "There were times terror was so strong, I could feel idiocy replace reason." But he also said, "I never let fear make a coward of me."
Keeble died in 1982 at the age of 65.
Monday, after years of bureaucratic foul-ups and red tape, Keeble was awarded the military's highest award, posthumously.
President Bush apologized that the country waited decades to recognize Master Sgt. Keeble for his military valor in Korea, giving him the Medal of Honor more than 25 years after he died.

Lyrics: WHAT HURTS THE MOST Rascal Flatts
I can take the rain on the roof of this empty house That don't bother me I can take a few tears now and then and just let them out I'm not afraid to cry every once in a while Even though going on with you gone still upsets me There are days every now and again I pretend I'm ok But that's not what gets me
What hurts the most Was being so close And having so much to say And watching you walk away And never knowing What could have been And not seeing that loving you Is what I was tryin' to do
It's hard to deal with the pain of losing you everywhere I go But I'm doin' It It's hard to force that smile when I see our old friends and I'm alone Still Harder Getting up, getting dressed, livin' with this regret But I know if I could do it over I would trade give away all the words that I saved in my heart That I left unspoken
What hurts the most Is being so close And having so much to say And watching you walk away And never knowing What could have been And not seeing that loving you Is what I was trying to do
I'm not afraid to cry every once in a while Even though going on with you gone still upsets me There are days every now and again I pretend I'm ok But that's not what gets me

I WASN'T BORN TO FOLLOW
Oh Id rather go and journey Where the diamond crescents glowing and Run across the valley Beneath the sacred mountain And wander through the forest Where the trees have leaves of prisms And break the light in colors That no-one knows the names of And when its time Ill go and wait Beside a legendary fountain Till I see your form reflected In its clear and jeweled waters And if you think Im ready You may lead me to the chasm Where the rivers of our vision Flow into one another I will watch her dive beneath The white cascading waters She may beg she may plead She may argue with her logic And then mention all the things Ill lose That really have no value In the end she will surely know I wasnt born to follow

A NOTE FROM brownprideroldies
Dedicated to the Memory of the one and only, Bo Diddley - 1928-2008
He passed away monday, Please read below for more info! ------------
Rock pioneer Bo Diddley dies at age 79
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Bo Diddley, a founding father of rock 'n' roll whose distinctive "shave and a haircut, two bits" rhythm and innovative guitar effects inspired legions of other musicians, died Monday after months of ill health. He was 79.
Diddley died of heart failure at his home in Archer, Fla., spokeswoman Susan Clary said. He had suffered a heart attack in August, three months after suffering a stroke while touring in Iowa. Doctors said the stroke affected his ability to speak, and he had returned to Florida to continue rehabilitation.
The legendary singer and performer, known for his homemade square guitar, dark glasses and black hat, was an inductee into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, had a star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame, and received a lifetime achievement award in 1999 at the Grammy Awards. In recent years he also played for the elder President Bush and President Clinton.
Diddley appreciated the honors he received, "but it didn't put no figures in my checkbook."
"If you ain't got no money, ain't nobody calls you honey," he quipped.

The Wish Interview:
Q. What do you want to be when you grow up? A Princess perhaps?
A. No I'm already a Princess.
Q. Well then. What would you like to be?
A. I want to Sing and Dance.
Q. Do you believe in Miracles and Wishes?
A. Yes.
Q. Then Make a Wish. Did you make one?
A. Yes.
Q. If you really believe. It Will Come True.
A. Really?
Q. Really. So What did you Wish for? A. I wished! I could Sing and Dance. So I can be a Star.
Q. So tell me. Do Princess's Really Kiss Frogs?
A. No! I like frogs! (but I don't Kiss them). But my mom does. My dad used to be a Frog, but he's not anymore.
Q. Hmmm.....
A. That's why I like them.
Q. Do Princess's really believe in Wishes and Miracles?
A. Yes.
Q. So; Do Princess's try to Sing and Dance every day.
A. Yes.
THE WISH IS GRANTED!
Q. Well then It's Settled. Your Wish has been Granted.
Someday, you will sing and dance. AND You will be a very Bright Star.
A. How do you know?
Q. Because, I made a wish one time and it came true.
But, I had to believe........ and I had to practice.
And as you can see: The Princess, Got Her Wish.
From a little frog, to Princess. Then from a Princess to a Singer and Dancer. From a Singer and Dancer to a Beautiful Little Star.

This is a True Story about a Real Princess, who has struggled with a crippling disability from birth.
It was questionable as to whether she would walk. She asked for a Miracle, and Believed, and Practiced every day she could.
The moral of the story? Miracles still happen and wishes Really can come true. When you Believe.
As for the Beautiful Star? Yes.
A Big Star? That's a Story for another time.
But I think it will have a Happy Ending!

So..... Why not try it?
"Make A Wish!"
How do I know? Well....

These things are good. Ice cream and cake a ride on a Harley rain on my tongue and the sun shining on my face.
These things are a drag. Dust in my hair holes in my shoes no money in my pocket and the sun shining on my face.
