Coming in October 2008, a tremendously exciting project for Northern Soul fans everywhere. We've done a deal with Wienerworld, a major music DVD company, and the same company who originally released our classic documentary "The Strange World Of Northern Soul", and we are now doing the definitive DVD box set. A five disc set of 200 performances called "Northern Soul's Greatest 200 Floorfillers". This uses some songs from "The Strange World Of Northern Soul" which are completely re-edited, so they look fresh and sparkling new. All the previous video effects done in the 1990s are gone forever, consigned to history. Plus loads and loads of never before seen videos, many of which have sat in the can untouched for many many years. Plus some newly recorded tributes to the classics. If you ever went to Blackpool Mecca or Wigan Casino, this is the must-have purchase of the year. This is the legendary and beautiful Evelyn Thomas singing "Doomsday", her second release which was recorded in the summer of 1975 in Chicago, and released in 1976. I discovered Evelyn while holding auditions in 1975 in Chicago, arranged by Danny Leake, who I'd met the year before, in England, with his group, 100% Pure Poison. In February 1976, Evelyn's first record, "Weak Spot" and a song by a young Chicago postman, L.J. Johnson, both charted in the same week, and both acts were flown over to appear on Top Of The Pops, both on the same show. The entire music business was flummoxed as to how two completely unknown young black singers from Chicago, who had never even recorded before, both had hits on entirely different labels in the same week as each other. Evelyn's second release, "Doomday" also hit the charts, debuting its first week at number 41, which in those days was a fair sized hit. It was a further eight years before Evelyn went on to record her classic, the seven million selling "High Energy" My biggest ever hit, made in 1984 for Record Shack Records, which sold seven million worldwide. How they ever went bust after that is a mystery, but I stepped in and rescued the whole catalogue from the liquidator. Evelyn and I recently teamed up again for the first time in twenty long years, and we also filmed some classics, including this Northern Soul smash, which has never had a video for the past thirty two years, till now. Especially for the new super-package on Wienerworld, "Northern Soul's Greatest 200 Floorfillers".

Judy Duff records her second track with us for the brand new "Northern Soul 2008" album with the fabulous "No More Second Chances". This lovely lady is the lead singer of a Birmingham Soul Band called The Nu Soul Generation. They are an explosive, dynamic, high-energy, high-calibre solid soul sound experience -- Tight vocals, sublime horns and pulsating rhythm section, who take you on a ride on a breath-taking journey from 60's & 70's Motown and Atlantic, through to 80's - 00's Disco & Soul. Formed from a collective of professional soul musicians, each with many years' band and performance experience behind them. Masters of their instruments, and bringing a fresh feel to the tried and tested covers of classic Soul and Disco songs, the tight rhythm and horn section explodes into a scintillating floor-filling frenzy from the very outset of their opening musical bars. Lead vocalist, Judy Duff, has worked with esteemed UK soul and contemporary music artists, and is a sought after session singer. Delivering a powerful stage and vocal mix means that their many gigs are a complete success. The repertoire consists primarily of classic and contemporary soul music, Tamla Motown, Stax and funk covers. One of the hottest 9-piece soul bands in the entire country, performing a sublime cocktail of soul, funk and disco floor fillers. A Cool band with a fresh and vibrant feel. And Judy was so in tune with the music I was making that she'd been buying my albums and wanted to be a part of my previous album, "Yesterday And Tomorrow", an album of new versions of my old classic songs, and what a happy turn of fate that she contacted me at just the right time to be the proud performer of the classic Evelyn Thomas hit, "Weak Spot". For the new album, we wrote a great new song together, in classic Blackpool Mecca style during its seventies Philly period, together with my long time producing partner Clive Scott. So yes, this is the absolute first time premiere of another track which I am exclusively unveiling here on YouTube, from the recent album, "Northern Soul 2008", which was just released on June 30th, 2008. It is true to say that I have tried many times in my life to capture that quintessence of what makes a Northern Soul record actually work on the dancefloor, and with records like Sidney Barnes "Standing On Solid Ground" and Chuck Jackson "All Over The World", I certainly hit a popular chord. But this time I have never been more artistically satisfied. Everything about this wonderful new song suggests the magic and energy of the era that I fell in love with as a teenager. Forget the purists - this one has it all. If you can keep your feet still while listening to this, then you must be a country and western fan or something. The new album, "Northern Soul 2008" was released on June 30th on Centre City Records, distributed once again by Passion Music and Pinnacle, and available to pre-order through the new website, http://www.ianlevine.co.uk This new Northern Soul album is a sequel to our album from last year, "Northern Soul 2007" which was the very first release on Centre City Records. The new album consists of twenty four brand new 2008 songs by soul and disco legends. Each song has an accompanying video of the artist basically performing it the studio and in outside locations, and the DVD has four extra bonus tracks too. The work that we have all put into this project is quite staggering, and I hope it will break down the barriers between the older Northern Soul stalwarts and a new generation who need younger acts who still produce the same vibe we all witnessed forty years ago for Motown's glory years. Play the CD, watch the DVD, and give new Northern Soul a chance this time.

My protege, Tahira Jumah, returns to the brand new "Northern Soul 2008" album with two tracks, the fabulous "World Of Your Own", and this bonus track, "Mister Right". I first cut this song with Frances Nero in 1991. It was to be the follow-up to "Footsteps Following Me", and I co-wrote it with my wonderful friend, the late great Edwin Starr, and he sang the backing vocals on it, which you can still hear on this new version. In the end we didn't release it as a single, but I always thought the song was better than the arrangement, so in 2006 I re-wrote all the chords and restructured it and it became a bit of an anthem off the compilation album "Solid Ground". Of course there was never a video, so I decided to redo it with my number one protege, Tahira Jumah, the fabulous diva who is my Evelyn Thomas for the new millenium. When I first met her, when she came to the studio with Fay Jones, they were both friends of Angelo Starr, and he brought them along to meet me. I decided to pair them up to make a song which I wrote with Angelo, "It's An Ill Wind". They had never met each other before that day. But as I got to know Tahira, I realised she had all the attributes of a real Ian Levine long term star, which is why she then sang my very first song ever, "Reaching For The Best", for my last album, "Yesterday And Tomorrow". And also, "It's An Ill Wind" has now firmly become one of my two favourite tracks off "Disco 2008", and, along with the Odette Adams track, these two ended up being the real sleepers of the whole bunch. Tahira is FABULOUS. I just want the privilege of introducing her to the world. The album, "Yesterday And Tomorrow" was released on March 3rd on Centre City Records, and we did another duet for it of Tahira and Fay, a remake of the Carol Woods hit, "I'm In Wonderland". Since then, the wonderful Tahira Jumah has been scouring England for the best soul talent there is, finding artist after artist to make our new album a vocal masterpiece, a new hope for the future, and a proof positive that great soul music is far far far from dead and buried. Thankyou my wonderful wonderful Tahira. You have done me proud. The best A&R talent scout there ever was. So yes, this is the absolute first time premiere of another track which I am exclusively unveiling here on YouTube, from the recent album, "Northern Soul 2008", which was just released on June 30th, 2008. I have spent thirty two years honing my craft to the point when I am able to produce authentic records like this. There are some small minded people who call themselves fans of Northern Soul who refuse to accept that anybody can make a new record that sounds like the real thing. But with well over two and a half million YouTube hits, they seem to be thankfully a very small minority, and my YouTube page is officially the 54th most watched UK Music Channel on YouTube of ALL-TIME !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The new album consists of twenty four brand new 2008 songs by soul and disco legends. Each song has an accompanying video of the artist basically performing it the studio and in outside locations, and the DVD has four extra bonus tracks too. Laverta Lewis makes her debut for the brand new "Northern Soul 2008" album with the utterl
Laverta Lewis makes her debut for the brand new "Northern Soul 2008" album with the utterly fabulous "Starry Eyed". Well it's not exactly a debut as such, more like a reunion after twenty two years. Laverta Lewis (real name Debra Brown) recorded with me back in 1986 as the lead singer of the group Dark Secret on the track "Liar Liar Liar", when they were signed to MCA Records - and here she is again with a mid-tempo groover, sounding like a true mid-70s Blackpool Mecca floorfiller with a fine string arrangement. Laverta comes from California and moved over to England in the mid 1980s together with husband Milton Brown. I met Milton through Laverta, and recorded two singles on him in 1986 and 1987 for the Nightmare label. Twenty one tears later we're all reunited. In the interim period, Milton had visited his home in Norfolk Virginia, only to find himself denied re-entry to be back with his wife and kids, a problem that took a long period to sort out, but all's well that ends well, and both husband and wife are back singing with Centre City Records. Out of all the tracks on the album, this one has become the real sleeper, the one you walk around all day singing, and just can't get the damn thing out of your head, come what may. Laverta is just fabulous, my very own Gladys Knight, so willing, so lovely, so co-operative, and such a warm hearted person, and it makes me proud to have artists of this calibre on Centre City Records. Our new album is a vocal masterpiece, a new hope for the future, and a proof positive that great soul music is far far far from dead and buried, and this is the absolute first time premiere of another track which I am exclusively unveiling here on YouTube, from the recent album, "Northern Soul 2008", which was just released on June 30th, 2008. Coming in October 2008, a tremendously exciting project for Northern Soul fans everywhere. Back in July 1999. when we launched "The Strange World Of Northern Soul" to an adoring audience of 1300 in Blackburn, I had tried every trick in the book to find Dean Parrish to film him singing "I'm On My Way" for the intro of our wonderful documentary. I knew his name was Phillip Anastasia, I knew his date of birth, I even knew who his old lawyer was, but I just could not find him in time. Years later, he surfaced, far too late for "The Strange World Of Northern Soul" but that loss is our gain, as here he is exclusively filmed especially for the new super-package on Wienerworld, "Northern Soul's Greatest 200 Floorfillers". This legendary song was the closing record every week at Wigan Casino, "I'm On My Way", which simply said it all. The record has been so beloved for over thirty years by the entire Northern Soul scene, and I am seriously proud to have filmed and re-recorded this wonderful performance of it, and I present it here on YouTube as a taster to encourage everyone to make an effort and buy the amazing 200 performances DVD set. The song was a piece of throaty blue-eyed-soul joyful exhuberance on the Laurie label, from New York, released in 1965, that golden year, and as fine a piece of Northern Soul as you could ever wish to hear. And the very quintessence of the mid Sixties.

Plus loads and loads of never before seen videos, many of which have sat in the can untouched for many many years. Plus some newly recorded tributes to the classics. If you ever went to Blackpool Mecca or Wigan Casino, this is the must-have purchase of the year. This is the legendary Bobby Hutton singing "Lend A hand", which was yet another legendary Northern Soul smash, that we filmed for "The Strange World Of Northern Soul". This is a piece of classic 1970s Chicago, which absolutely epitomised the days in Blackpool Mecca, and the Highland Room, when the sound changed from pure Sixties into fresh new Seventies soulfulness. It was a piece of early soulful Disco joyful exhuberance on the ABC label, first played off the album before it ever made it to seven inch. Bobby had two monster Northern smashes, the other being "Come See What's Left Of Me", which we also filmed and re-recorded with him. Bobby Hutton is known for singing Smooth R&B, Jazz, and contemporary, pop, He also appreciates opera, country music, blues, etc. Bobby Hutton began singing at the age of five. His actual professional career began In Detroit, Michigan. He won a talent show At the 20 Grand club and was invited to Motown. While at Motown he had a chance to learn quite a bit about writing songs, and what they look for in songs. Believing the hook in a song actually started there, Bobby, then known as Harold Hutton, became a part of the Motown family. Who was there at the time? Marv Johnson, Marvin Gaye, Mary Wells, Smokey and all the Miracles, The Supremes, The Temptations, and he was there when Stevie Wonder auditioned for Motown singing a Jackie Wilson song. His reason for leaving Motown is a story as yet untold. While in Detroit Bobby was hanging out at Billy Davis's house ,Billy and Berry Gordy use to write together, they wrote songs for Jackie Wilson. Living in Billy's house was David Ruffin. David and Bobby developed a friendship. Practiced singing different vocal runs. After leaving Detroit, Bobby moved on to Chicago and signed with Chess Record company, never getting a release from Motown. At Chess he was hired to sing with Fontella Bass, he took Bobby McClure's place. Now it's Fontella Bass & Bobby Hutton and that's how he got the name Bobby. Their first job was at the world famous Apollo Theater New York City. Next he signed with Philips record co. recording songs like Come see what's left of me, More today than yesterday, I can't stand a woman two timing her man, Your my whole reason, written by Donnie Hathaway. That song was the song Bobby sang on the very first nation wide Soultrain show. Over thirty years ago, along with Glayds Knight and the Pips, Eddie Kendricks, and the Honey Cone. Later Bobby would sign with ABC Dunhill where he recorded the Nothern Soul Athem Lend a hand. Bobby Hutton still today makes his living just singing. For those years without a record deal singing in Hotels,Clubs,Casinos, and private functions have kept him busy. We filmed this video both in Chicago and also when Bobby was appearing in England at a Northern Soul Weekender in 1999, when we were filming our marathon six disc, twenty four hour massive documentary about the entire history of the Northern Soul scene, which contained 131 specially recorded performances of all the classics, and is still available on a six disc box set from Wienerworld. So, Bobby was more than happy to make this one and only one-time performance especially for us, for our ground breaking Encyclopedia Britannica of Northern Soul, and I am so glad that we did.

If you ever went to Blackpool Mecca or Wigan Casino, this is the must-have purchase of the year. This is the legendary Detroit group called The Dynamics, led by Ernest Fudge, who recorded so many many Northern Soul hits. Unfortunately there seem to have been nine different groups called The Dynamics, which makes it virtually impossible to put together a proper biog. But these are the exact guys who recorded this wonderful Northern Soul smash, "Yes I Love You Baby", written and produced by Detroit legend, Richard "Popcorn" Wylie, and first released on his own label, Top Ten Records, before being licensed out to Laurie Records for national distribution. This legendary floorfiller was yet another legendary Northern Soul smash, that we filmed for "The Strange World Of Northern Soul". This is a piece of classic 1960s Detroit which epitomised the early days of Blackpool Mecca, and the Highland Room. It still sounds great but has been much forgotten and neglected over the years. It was a piece of Motownesque joyful exhuberance on the Laurie label, from 1967, that golden year, and as fine a piece of Northern Soul as you could ever wish to hear. And the very quintessence of the mid Sixties. We recut it in 1999, with Pat Lewis's help in finding the original members, when we were filming our marathon six disc, twenty four hour massive documentary about the entire history of the Northern Soul scene, which contained 131 specially recorded performances of all the classics, and is still available on a six disc box set from Wienerworld. So, we really got all The Dynamics together, and they were more than happy to make this one and only one-time performance especially for us, for our ground breaking Encyclopedia Britannica of Northern Soul, and I am so glad that we did.

If you ever went to Blackpool Mecca or Wigan Casino, this is the must-have purchase of the year. This is the Volcanos, who, as all Philly afficionados will know, went on to become the Trammps, with whom I had the pleasure of personally cutting five songs. We first worked with them to make our 1992 remake of the Philly classic, "Hold Back The Night", which has had nearly a hundred thousand hits here on YouTube. The Trammps were on tour with my guitar player, Erwin Keiles, and I cut five tracks with them, that one, along with "Feet Don't Fail Me Now", "Conversation", "My Love Is Free" and "Ten Per Cent". Six years passed and we then asked them to reform the lineup of the original Volcanos, which included brothers Doc and Harold Wade, singing "It's Against The Laws Of Love", and also "Storm Warning", which were both classic examples of Northern Soul smashes, that we filmed for "The Strange World Of Northern Soul". This is a piece of classic 1960s Philly which epitomised the early days of Blackpool Mecca, and the Highland Room, way back in 1973. It still sounds great but has been much forgotten and neglected over the years. It was a piece of Motownesque joyful exhuberance on the Arctic label, owned by Jamie/Guyden Records, from 1966, that golden year, and as fine a piece of Northern Soul as you could ever wish to hear. And the very quintessence of the mid Sixties. We recut it in 1999 when we were filming our marathon six disc, twenty four hour massive documentary about the entire history of the Northern Soul scene, which contained 131 specially recorded performances of all the classics, and is still available on a six disc box set from Wienerworld. Not my favourite remake of one of my old songs, not by any means, but several people have
Not my favourite remake of one of my old songs, not by any means, but several people have asked for this to be on YouTube so your wish is my command. Cathy Marie Edgar remakes my 1976 Disco classic, originally sung so wonderfully by Barbara Pennington, called "Twenty Four Hours A Day", which came out on United Artists Records in 1976, and topped the Billboard US Disco charts for seven weeks in 1977. Truthfully, there is no-one who could sing this song like Barbara Pennington did, so maybe remaking it was not a wise idea. Cathy does her best, and she was another artist found by Tahira Jumah. This was a bonus track for my iconic album, "Yesterday And Tomorrow", which is probably the most dear to my heart project that I have ever undertaken. I decided after thirty three years since I made my very first record, "Reaching For The Best" by The Exciters, to take a trip back down memory lane and recut thirty of my classics on artists who I am currently working with, reinterpreting them in 2008 without losing the magic that made them special in the first place. It's a totally self indulgent project, but one which already has my fans salivating with delight. I first got the idea when I recut Evelyn Thomas's wonderful classic "Have A Little Faith In Me" with Ebony Alleyne, last year. So I'm doing thirty in total, twenty four for the CD and six more extra ones for the DVD, picking either my biggest hits, my most beloved tracks, or the songs which people most requested to see a video. As I must clearly explain, these are not the original versions. And that's what makes the project exciting and new. These are brand spanking new interpretaions of the classics, by Centre City's current roster of artists , built up over a thirty three year career of making records. REACHING FOR THE BEST - WEAK SPOT - YOUR MAGIC PUT A SPELL ON ME - BABY I'M STILL THE SAME MAN - HE'S SO IRREPLACEABLE - MY HEAD'S IN THE STARS - NO WAY OUT - LOOKS LIKE LOVE IS HERE TO STAY - I'M IN WONDERLAND- TWENTY FOUR HOURS A DAY - MY CLAIM TO FAME - TRUE LOVE IS MY DESTINY - NEVER LET GO - NEW YORK'S ON FIRE - SO MANY MEN SO LITTLE TIME - HIGH ENERGY - HE'S A SAINT HE'S A SINNER - ON A CROWDED STREET - CLOSE TO PERFECTION - ALL OVER THE WORLD - MY HEART KEEPS BEATING FASTER - TECHNICOLOUR - FOOTSTEPS FOLLOWING ME - I FOUND HEAVEN - MORE TO THIS WORLD - FAN THE FLAME - I CAN'T ERASE THE THOUGHTS OF YOU - DANCING ON THE EDGE OF A DREAM - RUNNING IN ANOTHER DIRECTION - WALKING ON AIR. The album, "Yesterday And Tomorrow" was released on March 3rd on Centre City Records, exclusively through the new website, http://www.ianlevine.co.uk - and I hope you will all consider supporting it. You can go straight to the website and buy the combined CD and DVD right now.
