This is the thing you need to know. Jesus Christ is alive. Man is sinful. By nature, we do all sorts of cruel things to each other. We are not sinners because we sin, we sin because we are sinners. Ever taught a baby to lie? You don't have too. It's in our nature to lie because of our sin nature. Sin is a crime against God. God is Holy. That is, He must punish sin. A judge in a court of law has to punish a criminal, if he does not, he is an unjust judge. The problem was that God is Holy and righteous and man was sinful. How could a Holy God forgive man and pardon him without becoming unjust himself? He couldn't just turn His back on our sin. So God himself, became a man, (Jesus Christ) and came to redeem man from God's wrath by taking that wrath upon Himself in our place.

The difference between Christianity and every other religion is this. Religion is man trying to be good enough to "earn" God's favor. However, good deeds doesn't make up for the crimes we commit. It would be like a child molester saying to a judge, "I give to charity and I am a good husband." The judge would say, you are still a child molester. I can't let you go free. The Christian faith knows that God paid the punishment for our sins when He died on a cross, and rose from the dead to prove that the payment was complete. God now demands that we repent (turn from our sins) and trust that Jesus Christ paid for our sins and trust Him as our Savior.
If a man rejects God's only plan for his salvation, he leaves God no other option but to allow that man to suffer for his own sins in hell. Ever know anyone that loved you enough to die for you? Jesus loved you that much.
