To answer your question, the instrument is called a "banjolin." It is a hybrid of sorts of a banjo and a mandolin, as was noted in the video. There are several instruments which people refer to as "banjolins." Ryan's is the sort that is itself a type of mandolin, in mandolin tuning, with the resonating head of a banjo. There are also instruments called the "mandolin-banjo" and "Banjoline," but they're different.

The one in the videos belongs to Ryan, not me. I own both a banjo and a mandolin, but not the two-in-one freakshow Ryan pretends is a legitimate instrument. It's more like a toy. But yes, I did play it for Got Your Nose and the 10 Ways to Get a Kitten one. It's pretty interesting-sounding, in a horrible sort of way.

I'm sure it will reappear at some point, Ryan Murphy loves that sort of weird shit.
