My name is Ryan Duns, SJ and I am a member of the Society of Jesus [www.jesuit.org] (I am studying to become a Catholic priest). I am currently teaching a course entitled "Intro to the Irish Tin Whistle" at Fordham University.

I maintain a blog where I post many of the tunes that I teach in my videos. If you wish to download them, go to: www.tinwhistler.blogspot.com

I look at teaching music as a form of evangelization. As as my heart has been moved by the gospel, so too has it been moved by Irish music. As I have found a voice to testify to the Good News through years of prayer and study, so also have I found a voice in the tradition of Irish music through years of practice.

The goal of these lessons isn't to teach you neat tin whistle tricks. It is to help you carve out your own space in a much larger tradition, to claim a voice through which you can express yourself and add to the rich fabric of the tradition.
I'm a Jesuit who plays Irish music (Jesuit = Catholic; I'm studying to be a priest).

Your fantastic playing and expertly done instructionals have inspired me to buy my first tin whistle. Just a little Clarke, but you've got to start somewhere, I suppose. Hopefully I'll be able to keep up with the lessons. Thank you for all of your hard work.

Your videos are really great my friend...they've helped me come a long way and I've only had a whistle for about 5 days now!....I'd like to keep in contact with you if that is at all possible, because I'm eager to learn the tin whistle and your teachings are great!..

Many thanks!

-Mike

After 29 years of..well life, I journyed to Ireland to meet family I have never seen. As a musician, I fell in love with the tradition and bought a tin whistle. While I was going to learn it whatever it took, I'm glad I stumbled across these videos. They helped tremendously. You have a deep passion for music and it shows. If you faith is anything like that, you have potential to be a good priest.

Hi Ryan, I'm learning the accordion for the past three years and one day hope to be good enough to play at feisanna. I picked up a whistle and I have begun your lessons on the side. Thanks, I didn't want to get formal lessons at the Detroit Irish Music Assoc. because they meet on Thursdays and I take my son to Irish dance lessons on Thursdays. Ok, so more info than you needed, sorry. Thanks again for the lessons.

You know, you should throw together a CD. It wouldn't take much; if you have iMove you probably also have GarageBand. It's really just a matter of playing a few songs into that, importing them into itunes and burning the playlist on a disk. Then you could send CDs to your fans and students! :D ... *cough* Well, anyway, I'll be a frequent listener on your channel. I'm quite a fan. :)
