He is surprised that he is not already in hell. Others may tell him that he is not so vile. But the sinner knows and confesses that he is vile before God. The sinner is made honest at the feet of the Lord, to the glory of God. An unsaved person dead in sin is a total stranger to his deadness. He has no inkling of the coldness and wretchedness of his heart. He has no real spiritual feeling. A saved soul groans and sighs under the sense of his sin. A proof of a saved life is a thirsting for God. The saved soul thirsts for the living God There is a real panting after the grace of God. The Holy Spirit gives a spiritual hungering and thirsting after righteousness that none but the Lord can satisfy. Another proof of a saved life is a spirit of prayer. &quot;They shall come with weeping, and with supplications will I lead them.&quot; (Jeremiah 31:9) Saying prayers is not the same as praying in spirit and in truth. Some think they pray wonderfully. They are fluent with their words. They think they have a talent for prayer. They never question if they are praying in spirit and truth. They think it sufficient to utter words. A mere uttering a few words fluently put together, is not real prayer. It is only mocking God. To such the Lord says, &quot;Ye hypocrites, well did Esaias prophesy of you, saying, This people draweth nigh unto Me with their mouth, and honoureth Me with their lips; but their heart is far from Me.&quot; (Matthew 15:7,8) The saved child of God knows he cannot make insincere prayers.
