Meiver, a Middle Eastern Dance performer and instructor in Boston, is a fiery entertainer specializing in Egyptian / Lebanese Cabaret style. With natural grace combined with her authentic feel for Arabic rhythms, she's become one of Boston's favorite and most sought after performers.
Her strong sense of rhythm fills her audience with excitement, leaving them mesmerized by the elegance, gracefulness and mystery of her movements. Beyond Raqs Sharqi, her repertoire includes double veil, sword balancing, raqs al assaya (cane dance from upper Egypt), Dabka, and the Muwashahaat rhythms of Andalusian origin.
Having spent the first 16 years of her life in the Dominican Republic, Meiver grew up dancing to tropical rhythms like Salsa, Merengue and Bachata and carries the warmth of the Caribbean in her heart. She started her professional study of dance 10 years ago, covering a variety of genres which have come to influence her style. After training in Modern Dance, Flamenco and Salsa, Meiver began studying Middle Eastern dance focusing on Raqs Sharqi, but also training on Romi, Dunyavi, Turkish and Persian.
Meiver is driven by the music and gives it all during her expert improvisations to live bands in Boston's most important Middle Eastern dance performance venues, having worked the nightclub circuit for close to 6 years, with several performances per week, as one of the regular dancers at the famed Layaleena, Baladi and Awtar, and in a large number of performances at private events. During this time, she has demonstrated professionalism, commitment and respect to the art form, as well as mastered command of the audiences she's performed for. Meiver has extensive experience with choreographed dance. She's been involved with several performing groups in the Boston area choreographing salsa, swing and ballroom-style cha-cha. For the last 3 years Meiver has been one of the choreographers for the Bellydance Overdrive trio, along with talented Egyptian musician Karim Nagi Mohammed (a.k.a. Turbo Tabla) and Boston based fellow dancer Nina Torres from Brazil. Bellydance Overdrive is an exciting Arabic-techno fusion troupe, that tours performing solos, duets and trios to Turbo Tabla songs and live music, wearing custom ethno-modern outfits designed by Karim, and presenting a blend of traditional and progressive Arabic dance. With Bellydance Overdrive Meiver has toured the Northeast of the US. This truope also does teaching combined with performance. For more info please visit www.turbotabla.com/dance.
Meiver's involvement with music goes from dancer, to radio DJ to music critic - having worked as a writer and music critic for Urban Latino Magazine, based in New York City and as a radio DJ for a local East Boston community radio station. Meiver has a double Bachelors of Science Degree from the University of Massachussetts Boston in International Business Management and Economics. For the last 8 and a half years, she worked for one of the world's top Biotechnology companies, specializing in international biopharmaceutical market registrations. Having just returned from a dance education sabbatical in South America she is happy to be back teaching and performing in the USA.

The ring or the octagon? Boxing or Mixed Martial Arts? These are questions that are feverishly defended by fan bases of the two sports. Boxing fans call MMA a barbaric sport which requires little or no skill. MMA fans say boxing is boring, slow, and riddled in corruption.
In this week's Sus Deportes on Boston Latin TV segment, GIl Matos and Cesar Doza discuss the two sports, and the generational gap that seems to exist within the two fan bases.

An ancient poetic genre created in Spain that has been used in Puerto Rico - and Latin Ame
An ancient poetic genre created in Spain that has been used in Puerto Rico - and Latin America - since the 17th century. Its themes were usually derived from books that poets read - or had read to them - like the Bible, Don Quixote, etc.
The decima is comprised of ten, octosyllabic verses that must rhyme in perfect form and end with the same verse, called "pie forzado," or "forced end."
For many years, decimas were used by jibaros to describe daily events or news in the community.

Ruben Blades receive Honorary Doctorate During Berklee's Latin Culture Celebration, Novemb
Ruben Blades receive Honorary Doctorate During Berklee's Latin Culture Celebration, November 1, 2005.
Blades was honored for his contributions to music and culture, a trait apparent in his career since he first paired politically tinged lyrics with salsa music and awakened audiences to the music as social commentary. He has distinguished himself as not only a musician but also an actor, appearing in 32 films and earning three Emmy nominations. As a humanitarian, he was named Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations against racism. Active in politics and social activism, he serves as Panama's Minister of Tourism. For his musicianship he has garnered six Grammies, the coveted 2005 ASCAP Founders Award, and a reputation as "the Latin Bruce Springsteen." Juan Luis Guerra, awarded the distinguished alumni honor during last year's Latin Culture week, credits Blades for inspiring him to begin writing his now famous lyrics.
