A view of life at the bottom of the world.
Go to www.antarcticimages.com to see some of my photos.
Nombre: Anthony (Antz)
I've been working in Antarctica as a seasonal contract worker since 1998 as a Satellite Communications Tech.
Been doing photography and time-lapse photography whenever I can fit it in, figuring out systems that work in the extreme cold that will last over long periods of time.

I have just completed a tour on the NSF Artists and Writers Grant to work on time-lapse footage full time. At the end of it a comprehensive film of a time-lapse "Year on Ice" will be released. The few shots available here are just a very small sample.

We keep a blog of our time on the Ice here... www.frozensouth.com

Right now I'm spending my 8th Antarctic winter on the Ice.

Anyone out there interested in a sponsorship deal for post-production I'd be happy to hear from.

So about how fast is the internet down there then? They should just get a few hundred miles of cat5 cable and thread it all the way to the south pole from McMurdo so the people down there can have internet too. :)

I'd never actually heard of the HAARP project until you mentioned it, and only know about it from what I can find on line. Wikipedia seems to explain it fairly well.
There are lots of real time images on line, I can think of quite a few web-cams, Scott Base, McMurdo , Mawson, Davis, Casey and many other stations. Do a search and you will soon find them. Most them only update the photo every 20 mins or so as satellite bandwith is expensive down here.
Alas, no big secrets down here, would make life more interesting if there were.
Google Earth is slowly updating their Antarctic imagery, adding more and more all the time. You can see McMurdo pretty clearly now.

Loved A year on the Ice, almost makes me wish I was down there with you :-) Almost but not quite: brrrrrrr

Blows my mind every time I watch your footage (which, by the way, is awesome to the nth degree). Not many people can surpress their sense of self preservation for adventure like that. And eight years out there, to boot? *Wow*. Even though you get to see and experience phenomina that most people only read about, I don't think you could pay me to stay a week. Can't help but smile as you and your wife laugh while she opens the door during the condition one storm. I mean, come on. That's scary as hell. Hat's off to ya, man.

Nice Vids...

Too bad the u.s. 'gov' is there cause everything the u.s.f.c.a. touches, turns to death, destruction, famine, hate, murder, etc., while the greedy bastards take over (evidence is everywhere of that truth)..

Question: Why has the real time imagery for the poles been cut off from the 'common' person? Seems sort ridiculous that the most pristine places on earth are cut off from viewing; unless, ulterior motives exist.

Are they using HAARP down there?

(I really don't think you could answer my questions in truth since you work on the base, but could you try?)

Just asking.

Peace.

Southparkguy... the geostationary communications satellites above the equator are only about 3 degrees above the northern horizon for us here. This is about as far south as you can go and have reliable full-time comms. They are not so lucky at the south pole.

So are you actually in Antarctica at the time you post your videos? Are you there now? How do they get internet access in Antarctica if they have it at all? I would imagine that most communications satellites are below the horizon!
